First announced in 2012, with construction launched in late 2014, world’s distinguished premium spirits company, Edrington, proudly unveiled a new distillery and visitor experience for The Macallan. Set on the breathtaking landscape of Easter Elchies estate in Speyside, Scotland, which has been home to the luxury single malt brand since 1824, the space was finally open to public earlier this month. An unparalleled distillery experience like no other is to be expected by whisky connoisseurs everywhere in the world.

From humble threshold, The Macallan has risen to become the leading single malt whisky brand across the globe. The reputation of the brand is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character, founded upon a set of guiding principles and values. A meticulous obsession with quality has been the trademark of The Macallan’s since its’ founding days. Such is also the case with the brand new distillery and visitor center. Designed by London-based architectural firm, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP), the mastermind behind London’s Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 and The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the stunning facility is undoubtedly set to be a global architectural staple on its own.

Inspired by the surrounding Scottish hills, the striking piece of contemporary architecture is cut into the natural contours of the land to further accentuate the aesthetic beauty of the building, while minimizing the visual impact on the Speyside landscape, all at the same time. Elgin-based Robertson Construction was chosen to perform the construction, with a team consisting of 25 contractors and up to 400 people specializing in more than 20 different trades to bring the magic to life. Edrington is investing a whopping £500 million in the brand, with the £140 million distillery at the heart of the mega project. This program increases investment in whisky, warehousing, and particularly in The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks.

A no-less-than-spectacular sight is ready to greet visitors from the moment they walk into the lobby, all the way through the glass wall separating the visitor center and the factory, which would permit them to peek right into the entire process of whisky distillation. Also not to be missed on the tour is its symbolic roof, which is one of the most complicated timber structures in the world comprised of 1,800 single beams, 2,500 different roof elements, and 380,000 individual components, with almost none of which are the same.

The first whisky had run through the stills from December of last year and it is expected that visitor numbers will continue to rise years following the grand opening. Along with that, the new distillery will also allow production of The Macallan to increase by approximately a third.
